Key Considerations for Applying for Various Work Visas in Malaysia

As more businesses from Greater China expand into Southeast Asia, Malaysia has emerged as a strategic destination for regional operations. However, if you’re planning to relocate employees or hire foreign professionals, understanding Malaysia’s work visa landscape is essential to avoid costly delays or compliance issues.

Here’s a practical guide to help SME owners and HR teams navigate Malaysia’s work visa system smoothly.
Malaysia doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all “work visa.” Instead, it offers several categories based on job function, salary, and duration of stay. The three most common types are:

  • Employment Pass (EP):
For foreign professionals working in managerial, technical, or highly skilled roles.

    • Minimum salary: RM5,000/month

    • Validity: Up to 5 years (renewable)

    • Industries: Tech, finance, engineering, consulting, etc.

  • Professional Visit Pass (PVP):
For short-term, contract-based foreign experts (e.g., trainers, technicians).

    • Validity: 6 to 12 months

    • Employer remains overseas-based

  • Temporary Employment Pass (TEP):
For semi-skilled workers or domestic helpers (commonly used in manufacturing, construction, etc.)

🔍 Tip: The Employment Pass is the most relevant for SMEs relocating key personnel from China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.
